Sally Anne Timmons
Thankyou for visiting !
I am from Dublin, Ireland and I live in West Yorkshire, England.
I began my illustration journey as a teenager making 'homemade' cards and games for friends and family. I then lived for periods of time in different countries while working in Hospitality, Photography, Visual Arts and Creative Arts Education. During this time I continued life long learning (Graphic Design, Painting, Photography, Critical and Curatorial Practices) including completing BA and Masters study programmes.
Collaboration and DIY culture has been an important creative starting point for me throughout my artistic career. Along with working as a freelance curator (heritage, healing and arts), I am a founding member of an artist - led collective called VIA Artists Group (initiated in 2001 in NYC) and I founded and managed Artists Studios - Commonplace - in Dublin City, Ireland (2006-2016).
.
Photography has remained an ongoing passion of mine. While freelancing and teaching photography, I have built custom cameras and portable darkrooms (including a 'car obscura') reinforcing my interest in 'DIY customs.

In 2020, I relocated to England to continue to work in Education, Heritage and the Creative Arts. Exploring and investigating my new surroundings in West Yorkshire has shifted my practice back towards illustration and storytelling through picture books. I am currently working on four dummy book projects. And a series of illustrated recipes that will be available in Autumn 2026.
Museum Diorama and Folk Art influence my practice. I make printing tools from recycled wood and packaging. l draw and print onto sumptuously mixed goauche prepped paper and i use 3d construction and collage as a sketching tool.
I have a sketchbook with me constantly. Some are folded up scraps of paper that contain plans upon plans of fiction and non-fiction subjects. I mostly sketch from life and then re-work my ideas back at my desk using digital tools..
I am inspired by the stories and struggles of people like me, who have also navigated across numerous creative and cultural roles. They include, Paul Klee, Edward Lear, John Millington Synge, Cuala Press, Josephine Baker, Helen Borten, Peter Kennard and Cat Phillips, Leonora Carrington, Steve McQueen (artist), Lee Miller and more…
