Solas

Info

This project was funded and initiated by Kildare County Council Arts Services Arts and Health Officer, Nicola Dunne in Association with Naas General Hospital Arts Committee.

In order to select and curate an exhibition from the Kildare County Council Municipal Art Collection, the Naas General Hospital Arts Committee felt it was important to open out their commitment to developing a visual arts programme to include further members of the staff community from Naas general Hospital.

The level of commitment and engagement on the part of each participant from the staff community is indicative of the level of commitment that each of these individuals have made to their professional lives working in a healing environment.

Archive Notes

Solas, meaning ‘light’ is the title of this exhibition which has endeavoured to expose selected works from the Kildare County Council Municipal Arts Collection. It is representative of the fact that many collections of art are loaned out from time to time and are encountered by multiple audiences within numerous contexts of time and place. The value of a resource such as The Kildare County Council Municipal Art Collection is made clear in the statement below by Isabel Nolan (one of the artists whose work is included in this exhibition).

“Once given a context or environment in which to have a relationship with, a work of art has the potential to perform over and over…”

The project involved site visits, artists workshops and talks. An opening event was attended by some of the Nationally renowned artists that are part of the Kildare County Council Art Collection.

For me, the exhibition acted as a navigation device within the architectural structure of a municipal facility. As a curator I enjoyed the challenge of placing works in certain locations around the hospital and engaging in conversation with staff and public users of the facility about the works and the effect that they had on them.
